Create your own interactive teaching materials using Hot Potatoes

Look at some examples of exercises created by Hot Potatoes on http://www.englishquizzes.prv.pl/

Now follow the Hot Potatoe tutorial and work through it to see the different type of exercises you can create

When you feel ready, do the 2-Minute challenge.

Now create an exercise using Hot Potatoes. Work with a partner if you like.

Exchange your exercises with other members of the group and try them out.

Using an MP3 recorder and creating a podcast

The MP3 recorder I recommend is the Philips Voice Tracer 7890.

Use the freeware program Audacity with the LAME MP3 encoder, if necessary, to export your file in MP3 format.

When you save or export your sound file in MP3 format select the best settings for the internet - 32 kbps and 11.025 kHz.

In groups of 4 record yourselves talking about either:
  • Using blogs in teaching
  • One of the task you did from the CEF chart

To create a podcast:
  • Go to Podomatic
  • Log in with the login I'll give you
  • Click on My Podcast
  • Click on Post an Episode
  • Give your post a title
  • Click on Import
  • Find your MP3 sound file on your computer
  • Click on Post Episode
  • Click on Get the Word Out
  • Skip the first step
  • In the next step, select Blogger in Choose Where to Share
  • Select Episode in Choose What to Share
  • Copy the code
  • Create a post on the blog
  • Paste the code in the Edit Html tab of the post

Using Vokis to practise contrastive emphasis and intonation

Log in to Voki with the login I'll give you and in pairs, create statements, questions and answers following this model.

Using voicethread for speaking practice

Look at the examples of how voicethread can be used on my blog posting
  • Log in with the login I'll give you
  • Choose 2 (or more) photos from FlickrStorm and talk about them
  • Use the instructions on the posting to help you
  • Create your voicethread and embed it on this blog

How can blogs help to encourage learner autonomy?

Work with a partner and talk about how you think blogs can benefit us as teachers. Consider:
  • how you can use them yourself
  • (if you have secondary classes) how you could use them with your students
  • how they can encourage learner autonomy
Then join together with another pair and discuss the points you've raised.
